Year One

Welcome to Year 1 at Unity!

In Year 1, children transition from a play-based learning approach in Early Years to more structured, independent learning. They continue to have access to valuable learning resources used in Reception to make learning as hands-on and practical as possible, especially during the first few months. The work from Reception continues throughout Year 1 to build up children’s reading skills so they can confidently decode text and develop a lifelong love of reading.

All Year 1 children are encouraged to become confident and resilient learners with a positive attitude towards their learning, even when they find it challenging. In the summer term, Year 1 children will be involved in the national phonics check.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to speak to Mrs Cumberbatch, Miss Cunningham (1HC), or Miss Biddle or Miss Francis (1EB). We are always happy to support you in any way we can and are available before and after school.

We’re looking forward to continuing our fantastic year with your children.
